Tension seems to be rising between supporters of the two league contenders for the party’s flag-bearer even before the party calls for nominations.
What started in Kumasi on the sidelines of the Party”s conference in Kumasi, where pro-Dr. Mahmoud Bawumia supporters attacked and prevented pro-Alan Kyerematen, Minister of Trade and Industry, supporters from entering the conference grounds and later caused six pro-Alan supporters to be locked up in police cells, spilled over to Tamale Wednesday afternoon.
Feeling triumphant from the Kumasi incident, the pro-Bawumia supporters kept on taunting their opponents.
In their bid to retaliate, the two sides clashed leading to a free-for-all fight near an office of the pro-Bawumia forces which was damaged, an eyewitness said.
Many onlookers have expressed disappointment at the development and have called for a cessation of such “unNPP-like” behaviour, especially from those believed to have incumbency advantage.
Nominations are yet to open and there is a feeling that if not curbed immediately by the party hierarchy, it will lead to damaging the party’s enviable credibility when the contest finally begins.
