The National Health Identification Authority (NHIA) in collaboration with the National Blood Service has held a blood donation exercise at the Teshie Camp Methodist Presby Church of the Kpeshie District in Accra.
Addressing patrons in her welcome address, the Greater Accra Regional Director of the NHIA, Madam Patience Danquah noted that the exercise was to commemorate the Sickle Cell Awareness Day as well as support the National Blood Service.
The event was attended by representatives from the 17 Regional Offices and characterized by free registration and renewal of the NHIA membership card as well as other fun activities.
Speaking at the gathering, Mr. Sedem Korku Adjorlolo, blood donor recruiter, stressed the importance of blood donation stating that it goes a long way to save the lives of accident victims, sickle cell patients, and the need for blood has become prevalent for women who go into labor.
According to him it also affords donors the need to shed off the excess blood produced by the body.
Mr. Adjorlolo, assured the audience that the blood donation process is smooth as further body and health tests are carried out before one becomes eligible to donate.
He also seized the opportunity to clarify that one doesn’t need to pay or be charged for receiving blood the only fee you should pay is for the blood processing to make it pure for use and void of any contamination. He further appealed to the public to ask questions on blood donation to clear all misconceptions.
Mr. Adjorlolo advocated for volunteer donors stressing it’s a civic duty and a conscious effort should be made to voluntarily promote blood donation.
In his final remarks, he said “If you donate more blood there won’t be any shortage and more lives will be saved”.
Mrs. Louisa Atta-Agyemang Deputy Chief Executive Officer, NHIA in charge of operations who was also present at the event emphasized the need for the exercise as it forms part of the annual collaboration of the NHIA as well as strengthens ties between the Authority and the Ghana Armed Forces.
She commended the host district, and the NHIA Staff for coming to the doorstep of the Ghana Armed forces for the exercise.
