Accra, Ghana – Irene Naa Torshie Addo-Lartey, immediate past Administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund and former Member of Parliament for Tema West, has thrown her weight behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s expected bid to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 presidential election.
Meeting with NPP constituency chairmen from Greater Accra today, Madam Torshie urged them to unite behind Dr. Bawumia’s future candidacy, describing him as the surest bet to continue the NPP’s transformational agenda.
She revealed that Dr. Bawumia had given her strong assurances she may be considered as his running mate should he secure the NPP’s flagbearership.
“Dr. Bawumia has assured me that he values the contributions of women and that I may be considered for the running mate position if we work together to secure his candidacy,” she reportedly told the gathering.
However, political watchers are closely monitoring how Dr. Bawumia will reconcile these assurances, as he is also said to have promised a possible running mate slot to Hon. Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, MP for Mampong and former Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, while privately indicating to some party insiders that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, current Energy Minister, could be retained as his running mate into 2028.
Analysts believe these overlapping promises could stir internal tensions as the race for the party’s 2028 ticket heats up, especially among influential factions within the NPP.
Nevertheless, Madam Torshie’s public declaration is seen by some as a strategic move to mobilise support among the party’s women and Greater Accra grassroots, bolstering her standing within the party’s future leadership calculations.
Efforts to reach Dr. Bawumia’s team for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
