Commercial drivers have embarked on a nationwide sit-down strike, following an increase in fuel prices over the past six months.
This according to the drivers is an unfair treatment they are prohibited to increase transport prices as well.
The nationwide strike has affected scores of Ghanaian commuters and brought businesses to a halt as they frequent the services of commercial drivers.
Commuters have been left stranded at the various bus terminals as drivers look unconcerned.
Transport leaders of the various unions have since backed the drivers’ actions.
With the current situation, some bus terminals have been turned into a football pitch whiles other buses are parked at the various bus terminals.
According to the drivers, the strike action is to register their displeasure with the rampant hike in fuel prices and unfair treatment by the government.
It however remains unclear how far they intend to carry on with their strike action.
The development has since boosted taxi and private cab services in the country.
The price of fuel in the country has significantly increased over the past six months, with many complaining about the situation.
Currently, most oil marketing companies in Ghana sell fuel between GH¢6.60 per litre and GH¢6.90 per litre.
Fuel prices in 2021 started at about GH¢5 per litre and are now threatening to cross the GH¢ 7 mark.
Meanwhile, here are seven taxes on fuel which amount to GH¢1.9 on each litre of fuel purchased.
