Lawmakers Challenged to Tackle Online and Street-Level Trafficking

Accra, Ghana – Survivor and advocate Bernice Ofei has urged Parliament to intensify public education to combat human trafficking, warning that traffickers are increasingly using social media and street networks to exploit victims.

Speaking at a parliamentary roundtable on human trafficking hosted by Hon. Davis Ansah Opoku, MP for Mpraeso, Bernice shared her own experience of being lured to Dubai under false job promises and trapped in domestic work for two weeks. She called for school programmes on online safety, safe migration and early signs of exploitation, alongside community campaigns to dismantle organised begging syndicates targeting children.

The Deputy Minister for Gender, Women and Social Protection, Lariba Zuweira Abudu, joined MPs including Davis Ansah Opoku, Darkoa Newman of Okaikoi Central, Paul Twum Barimah of Dormaa East and Charles Acheampong of Lower West Akim in highlighting the disruptive impact of trafficking in their constituencies.

Several MPs pledged to push for legal reforms addressing trafficking facilitated online and to collaborate with survivor advocates on awareness initiatives.
