NPP Decision 2024: Bawumia’s Camp Desperately Pushing for Early Congress, as Popularity Tumbles

New Patriotic Party

Haruna Nuako writes

The second hill of the land seems to be experiencing some fire-ridden tremors that are causing things to fall apart, irrepressibly. I don’t know whether to call it fear, panic, desperation, or reality check. Whichever way one looks at it, there seems to be fire on the hill that is making things fall apart.

The magnificence of the second hill, which hitherto attracted some reasonable number of admirers, is rapidly being lost through a spiral credibility crisis that seems to be getting worse by day.

Okay, permit me to suspend the poetic metaphors for now and hit the nail on the head.

On 18th November 2021, a crisis meeting was held at the Jubilee House in an auspicious bid to detour the huge boulder of nightmarish credibility crisis that befalls the Vice President’s political ambition.

At the meeting were the Regional Research Officers of the party, who have now become the officers of the second gentleman’s campaign, and some Ministers and Deputy Ministers who have been selected to coordinate the campaign of the Vice President, as well as, other senior members of their campaign team.

Based on the report of the Regional Research officers and the discussion that ensued, it is clear that things don’t look good for the Vice President — and might even get worse with time.

According to the report, Dr. Bawumia’s chances of winning the 2023 presidential primary of the NPP is speedily deteriorating and chiefly attributed the situation to the many damning videos that are making rounds on social media against him, among other things.

In their desperation, a decision was taken at the meeting for immediate actions to save the dire situation. Hence, they have decided to push for an early congress considering how fast his political fortune is dwindling.

The Majority Leader, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, the man who is desperately seeking to be made a running-mate, in the highly unlikely event that the Vice President is forcefully made the party’s presidential candidate, is the one who has been tasked to champion the early congress crusade.

Should such a self-centered move surface in our party politics, let all and sundry consider it a desperate measure to save their personal agenda from collapsing on their head. Obviously, they care little about the wellbeing of the party at the moment, as their desperation hits the roof.

They believe early congress will favor them in two ways. First, they believe with early congress, their main opponent, Hon. Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, who is obviously the leading aspirant, would not have enough time for resources mobilization for the election. They firmly believe only money can win them the election. Second, they believe that it would help them to avert the effect of the credibility crisis on his chance.

So, now, they want to harass the party’s constitution and make it a victim of their desperation. This is the extent they want to go to make sure their choice (not the party’s choice), becomes the candidate for 2024. But, you see, the position of the party’s constitution is unambiguously clear on the matter of presidential candidate election.

Per Article 12(3b) of our party’s constitution, when the party is in government, the election of the presidential candidate shall be held not later than 11 months before the national general election. Therefore, one would think it wise for our great Party to stick to the proposed time (2023), for Congress to be held.

I, therefore, urge every patriot who really cares about the wellbeing of the party and wants the party to be rebuilt to win the 2024 election, to rise up against this move of the cabal. We should not allow them to destroy the party beyond its current deplorable state. It is common knowledge that the grassroots of the party has been rendered weak and deplorable through neglect.

Thus, this is not the time for constitution manipulation to favor any person or group of persons in the party. This is not the time to put personal interest ahead of the party’s interest. This is not the time to hurt the unity of the party to the satisfaction of any parochial interest.

This is the time to rebuild the party machinery and make sure it is very well oiled and fueled to successfully make the 2024 journey without any hitch. This is the time to rise up as a party man and not as any man’s man. This is the time to sing a song of unity. This is the time to dream a dream of victory. This is the time to inspire confidence and hope to make the grassroots come alive. This is the time to care for the grassroots of the party. This is the time to fight for victory like never before.

God bless our homeland Ghana! God bless our great Party!
